Terms of service
These terms apply to dodi: the website https://www.dodi.app, the web app at https://app.dodi.app, and the dodi apps for Android and iOS (together "dodi"), operated by Alexander Birke, [to be added], Austria ("we", "us"). You can reach us at team@dodi.app.
Our privacy policy explains how we handle personal data. It is part of how dodi works, so please read it together with these terms.
1. Who can use dodi
Families use dodi together. The account holder must be an adult (at least 18 years old) and a parent or legal guardian of the children they add, or act with the permission of a legal guardian.
Children never have their own dodi account. They use dodi through kid profiles that the parent creates and manages inside the parent's account. As the account holder you are responsible for how your children use dodi, in particular for:
- deciding which features your children may use, and setting a parent PIN so that only you can open the parent area,
- choosing the AI providers and models dodi uses for your family,
- supervising your children's use in a way that fits their age.
2. Your account
You register with an email address and a password. When you create your account, dodi also creates an account key for you. Your family's personal content (for example your children's names, their memory, your games and your AI keys) is encrypted on your device with keys derived from your password and account key before it reaches our servers. We cannot read it and we cannot restore it for you.
That is why you must keep your password and your account key safe. If you lose both, nobody can recover your encrypted data, including us. Do not share your login with other people. Tell us immediately at team@dodi.app if you think someone else has access to your account.
3. What dodi offers
Among other things, dodi currently includes:
- a voice companion that talks with your children, remembers what they enjoy and adapts to them,
- Game Studio, where you describe a learning game and an AI builds it,
- a library of learning games, including games other families have published on dodi Discover,
- friends between families you know, and sharing games with them,
- insights for parents about activities and AI usage.
We develop dodi continuously. We may add, change or remove features. When we remove an important feature, we tell you in advance, and you can delete your account. We aim for dodi to be available at all times but cannot guarantee uninterrupted availability, for example during maintenance or outages of AI providers.
4. AI features and AI providers
We do not run our own AI models. The AI features use models from third-party AI providers (for example xAI, Anthropic, Google or Venice). You decide per feature (voice, thinking, game creation and images) which provider dodi uses, by bringing your own key: you create an account and an API key with the provider and store the key in dodi. The key is encrypted on your device. Your device sends requests directly to the provider. You have your own contract with that provider: its terms and usage policies apply to you, and the provider bills you directly for usage.
The provider receives what the feature needs to work, including your children's voice when they talk to the voice companion. The privacy policy explains which data goes to which provider. Before you choose a provider, check that its terms allow the use you plan. You must not use a provider for something its terms forbid.
AI can make mistakes. Answers and games generated by AI can be wrong, unsuitable or surprising, even though dodi instructs the models to behave in a child-appropriate way. In particular:
- Try a game yourself before your children play it.
- AI answers are not professional advice, for example on health, safety or legal questions.
- If an AI answer or a game is inappropriate, report it in the app under Give feedback (category "Inappropriate content"), with Report this game on a Discover game, or by email to team@dodi.app. We use these reports to improve dodi's safety instructions and filters.
5. Special rule for Google Gemini
Google's terms for the Gemini API only allow use by adults and do not allow use in services that are directed at or likely to be used by people under 18. If you connect a Google Gemini key to dodi, you may only use it to create games in Game Studio yourself. You must not use Gemini for any feature your children use directly, in particular:
- not for the voice companion that talks with your children,
- not for the "thinking" or image models that dodi uses while your children talk to the companion or play games (for example drawings or texts generated during a game).
If you want to use AI for your children's features, choose a provider whose terms allow it. You are responsible for following Google's terms when you use your own Gemini key.
6. Costs
Using dodi is free of charge. Your AI provider bills you directly for what your key uses, under your contract with it. If we offer paid features in the future, we show you the price and the terms before you can buy anything, and nothing you use today becomes paid without your agreement.
7. Your content
Your content stays yours. "Content" means everything you or your children create or enter in dodi, such as games, prompts, notes, memory and snapshots. You give us only the rights we need to run dodi for you: to store, transmit and display your content to you and to the people you share it with. Most of it is end-to-end encrypted, so we only store it in encrypted form.
You must have the rights to the content you put into dodi. Do not upload content that you are not allowed to use, and do not put personal data of other people into games or texts that you share.
8. Sharing with friends and publishing on Discover
Friends. You can connect your family with families you know. Only connect with people you trust. A friend family can see what you share with them, such as the kid profile card you share and the games you share. You can remove a friend at any time.
Discover. You can submit a game you created to dodi Discover. A published game is public: everyone can see and play it, also on the website, and other families can add it to their library or make a copy for themselves ("remix"). Before a game goes live we check it, with automated tools including an AI review and, where needed, a human. We may reject a game without giving detailed reasons, and we may remove a published game that breaks these terms.
When you publish a game, you grant us and every dodi user a free, worldwide, non-exclusive license to show, play and remix the game within dodi and on our website for as long as it is published. If you take the game off Discover, we stop showing it, but copies that other families remixed before that remain theirs.
A published game must not contain personal data, such as a child's real name, photo, voice or school.
9. Rules for using dodi
You must not use dodi to:
- create, store or share content that is illegal, sexual, violent, hateful, or otherwise harmful to children,
- harass, deceive or exploit other people, especially children,
- break into, overload or probe dodi, other accounts or the game sandbox, or get around dodi's encryption, limits or safety measures,
- use dodi or the AI providers in a way their terms forbid (see sections 4 and 5),
- copy dodi's service automatically (for example by scraping), resell access or share an account with people outside your family.
If you break these rules, we may remove content, temporarily block features or, in serious or repeated cases, close your account. Unless there is an urgent reason, we warn you first and give you the chance to explain.
10. Open source and self-hosting
The dodi app is open source under the GNU Affero General Public License v3 (AGPL). The AGPL governs the source code. These terms govern the dodi service that we run at https://app.dodi.app and in the store apps. If you or someone else runs dodi on their own server, that operator is responsible for it, not us.
11. Ending your account
You can stop using dodi and delete your account at any time in the app under Settings, General, Delete account, or as described on our account deletion page. Deleting your account removes your family's data as described in the privacy policy.
We may end the contract with two months' notice by email, for example if we shut down the service. Our right to end the contract immediately for good cause (for example a serious breach of section 9) remains.
12. Liability
We are liable without limitation for damage we cause intentionally or through gross negligence, and for injury to life, body or health. For slight negligence we are only liable for breaches of essential contractual obligations, limited to the damage typical and foreseeable for this kind of contract. Mandatory liability under product liability law and other mandatory consumer protection rules remains unaffected.
We are not responsible for the services of AI providers that you use with your own key, or for content that other families publish, unless we cause the damage ourselves.
13. Changes to these terms
We may change these terms when the law, the service or the AI providers' rules change. We announce material changes by email at least 30 days before they apply. If you do not agree, you can delete your account before the change applies. We point this out to you in the announcement.
14. App stores
If you downloaded the dodi app from the Apple App Store or Google Play, these terms are between you and us, not Apple or Google. Apple and Google are not responsible for the app, its content, maintenance or support, or for claims relating to it. For apps downloaded from the Apple App Store, Apple's Standard End User License Agreement also applies, and Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.
15. Applicable law and disputes
Austrian law applies, excluding its conflict-of-law rules and the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. If you are a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live, and you can bring claims before the courts of your place of residence. We are not obliged and not willing to take part in dispute resolution before a consumer arbitration board. Please contact us first at team@dodi.app, we will try to find a solution together.
If a provision of these terms is invalid, the rest remains valid.
